Thinking about how the earth is being destroyed to continue, for a brief period of time, a way of life that is inherently unsustainable and spiritually worthless. In NYC, the younger people - whether hipsters or neo-hippies - swirl through endless nights of drink and drugs searching for some kind of adventure or intensity. It’s largely, if obliquely, an erotic quest. Everyone is too distracted to consider what it means that the US was one degree hotter last year than ever before - and perhaps there is a bit of fin de siecle frenzy in the nightlife, a sense that these kinds of opportunities may not last for long. Don’t we deep down assume that the young people today - if large populations manage to survive the Sixth Great Extinction, peak oil, and sea level rise - will be the clean-up generation? It will be left to them to do whatever they can to restore and regenerate a planet transformed by human ignorance and hubris? No wonder they don’t want to wake up to the situation, and prefer pretending that outmoded forms of culture still have relevance.
